What Is Skin Pigmentation?
The complexion of the skin is decided by pigments referred to as melanin that is made by specialized cells called melanocytes of the skin. There are over a hundred and fifty genes that have an effect on complexion either directly or indirectly. This affects the natural pigmentation of the skin and thus decides an individuals’ skin tone. This is skin pigmentation.
The natural pigmentation of the skin is affected by various internal and external factors and it leads to an uneven skin tone and dark patches of the skin.
What Causes Skin Pigmentation Disorders?
In some cases, the melanin production goes out of the normal; either deficient or an excessive amount of melanin is made inflicting skin pigmentation disorders. These conditions make the skin appear lighter or darker than traditional, or blotchy and stained. An excessive amount of melanin causes hyperpigmentation and deficient melanin leads hypopigmentation.
The root cause is mostly attributed to internal factors like hormones, epithelial tissue cells, or biological conditions like pregnancy. External factors like UV, burning, or contact with chemicals also might cause pigmentation disorders. Stress and dietary imbalances are also known to cause skin pigmentation disorders.
In skin pigmentation disorders, melanin is created by a series of oxidative reactions that involve the amino acid tyrosine within the presence of the enzyme tyrosinase. So, the action of tyrosinase can alter or halt melanin production.
Some of the common skin pigmentation disorders:
Melasma: Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder that appears on the face or on the other parts in the form of tan or brown patches, especially on the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, nose, and chin. Melasma is mostly seen in pregnant women. The spots generally fade after pregnancy, but sometimes they just don’t go away. It may also occur in women if she takes birth control pills or because of postmenopausal estrogen. Men too can get melasma because of nutritional deficiencies.
Vitiligo : Vitiligo is a pigmentation disorder where the immune system of the body attacks the pigment cells, and the consequent loss of pigments causes smooth, white skin patches, usually around the mouth and eyes, or on the back of the hands.
In some people, the skin discoloration can appear all over the body. Vitiligo can also occur if you suffer from the disease associated with immune system disorder such as diabetes, pernicious anemia, thyroid disease, or Addison’s disease. Post Inflammatory/ Hyperpigmentation/ Hypopigmentation : Sometimes, skin infection, tan, sunburn, blisters other burns on the skin or other trauma to your skin, cause a decrease or increase of pigmentation in the affected area that’s called Post Inflammatory, Hyperpigmentation or Hypopigmentation.
Albinism: Albinism is an inherited disorder caused by the absence of the pigment melanin. It can occur in skin, hair, or eyes.
Freckles Treatment: Freckles is a type of pigmentation disorder in which tiny dark spots appear on the skin in bulk, noticeably on the nose, cheeks, upper shoulders and arms.

Before certain procedures, there is some extra care that must be taken as advised by Dr Sakhiya which may include taking certain precautions against sun damage, taking prescribed medications, etc.
What Are The Different Methods Involved In Skin Pigmentation And Skin Lightening Treatments?
At Celebre Aesthetics, Surat, Skin Pigmentation treatment is done with the help of the following methods:
A chemical peel is a treatment process in which a chemical solution is used to improve the texture and tone of the skin by ‘peeling the damaged outer layers. Sun exposure, acne or ageing can leave the skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred.
Chemical peels can improve the skin’s appearance. Applying chemical solution makes skin “blister” and eventually peel off. The newer skin is usually smoother, bright and more youthful.
Chemical peel treatment is an outpatient procedure. Before getting skin peel treatment, some people need to follow an instructed precaution of 2 to 4 weeks, which leads to better results.
No anesthetic is required for the procedure as it is a non-invasive procedure.
The recovery after the procedure varies from person to person.
Topical Creams and Medications
Depending upon the situation, Dr Sakhiya might also suggest certain creams that might be able to counter the issue of pigmentation. Choosing the right formulation depending upon the case of every individual is necessary. Hence, after a proper analysis of the issue at hand, he might prescribe certain medicated gels or creams which can be applied either to counter pigmentation, lighten the skin or both.
Along with creams, certain tablets might also be prescribed to speed up the procedure.
Microdermabrasion is a skin procedure in which tiny exfoliating crystals are used on the skin to exfoliate the dead, and dull skin. The tiny crystals are sprayed on the skin in a specific manner to work on all the skin types. It is a very fast procedure without any downtime or side effects.
Microdermabrasion is highly beneficial to restore even skin tone and get rid of any and all blemishes and spots on the skin for radiant and glowing skin.
All the patient needs to do is to apply sunscreen and to moisturize the skin properly after the procedure to get the best results
- Laser Treatment
Laser treatment for pigmentation makes use of short pulsating beams of laser to get rid of the pigmentation on the skin and achieve flawless results.
Different types of lasers are used for this process, they involve ablative lasers and non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers work on the superficial layers of the skin and help in vaporising the tissue. Vaporization of tissue results in the beginning of a healing process which boosts collagen production. Ablative lasers are an excellent choice for getting rid of stubborn sun tan and pigmentation.
Non-ablative lasers are stronger as they penetrate deeper into the layers of skin. They help in collagen production and skin growth. Ablative lasers are useful for long term sun damage to the skin, heavy pigmentation, etc.
What Is The Recovery Like After Skin Pigmentation Treatments?
The recovery of each of these treatments is different. Also, the individual’s unique case factors in the recovery time. The results of these procedures are visible after a few days after the procedure is done. However, following Dr Sakhiya’s instructions to the word are necessary to have excellent and long-lasting results. The type of procedure required for every patient is different. This is decided after the analysis, during the consultation. In some cases, the pigmentation can be reduced using topical creams or products. This decision lies in the hands of Dr Siddharth Sakhiya and hence he gives utmost importance to consultation.
