What Is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a disease that affects the melanin creating cells of the body. Melanin creating cells are actually those which determine the colour or complexion of the skin. They are either destroyed or die thus stopping the production of melanin altogether. This often results in white patches on the skin which gradually grow, affecting the entire body. Often, vitiligo also affects the hair on the scalp, eyebrows and even eyelids to grey prematurely and their colour usually fades away.
Although Vitiligo is not a life-threatening disease, it often has an effect on the self-esteem and confidence of the person. The pressure of being physically perfect builds upon the individual as the skin starts looking patchy and uneven.
What Are The Reasons And Symptoms For Vitiligo?
The reasons for Vitiligo are still being widely deciphered and studied. However, some of the possibilities involve:
- Family History: In certain cases, the disease is passed on through the generations.
- Auto-Immune Issues: In certain situations, vitiligo occurs as a disorder of the immune system.
- External Factors: It can also be a situation like a severe sunburn, contact of the skin with a harmful chemical, etc.
Generally, when one starts noticing vitiligo, some of the prominent areas involve the hands, face and other body openings including the genitals.
The hair on the affected body part starts greying prematurely.
The inside of the mouth, that is the mucous membranes start losing colour.
What Are The Types Of Vitiligo?
These are some of the most common types of Vitiligo:
- Universal Vitiligo: This type of vitiligo affects the entire body and all skin surfaces
- Generalized Vitiligo: Generalized vitiligo affects many areas of the body, often symmetrically and spreads gradually.
- Segmental Vitiligo: This type of vitiligo spreads on one part of the body for a certain span of time and then stops.
- Localized Vitiligo: This spreads only on one or a few parts of the body.
The spread of Vitiligo cannot always be in a pattern. In some instances, it’s spread is unpredictable. Vitiligo practically has no cure but timely treatments can help one limit it’s spread and help to restore the previous skin colour.

This is the main reason why Dr. Siddharth Sakhiya, the Board-certified Plastic, Cosmetic and Hair Transplant Surgeon gives one-on-one consultations his utmost priority. He strongly believes in understanding the root cause of the issue first and then gives an authentic diagnosis.
During the consultation, Dr Siddharth Sakhiya asks the patient a series of questions like their medical history, family illnesses, the current state of the issue, etc. this helps him to understand the situation better and thus paves the way for a better treatment plan.
Dr Siddharth Sakhiya will first understand the needs and requirements of the patients thoroughly and then explain to them the achievable results. Transparency is of utmost importance to Celebre Aesthetics, Surat. Hence, the patients are guided through the process and the attainable results expressed clearly. This helps the patients to make a well-informed decision.
What To Expect Before The Treatment?
Dr Siddharth Sakhiya will need to know the entirety of the medical history of the patient before beginning with the procedure. Any previously done cosmetic procedures must also be informed. The patient might be advised to undergo certain blood tests to rule out the chances of any other health issues.
Any impending allergy issues must be informed to the doctor well beforehand.
What Are The Treatments Involved In Treating Vitiligo?
If Vitiligo is progressing, it should be treated first by medical treatment to make it stable or to reduce in size. After it is stable in size, surgical removal for a residual lesion are recommended. Some difficult Vitiligo patches not responding to medical treatment need surgical removal. Phototherapy is one of the treatments used to treat Vitiligo.
Excision is Celebre Aesthetic’s preferred technique in a smaller area to give the best possible colour match. We use Dermabrasion along with Skin grafting for larger lesions.
Here are some of the details of the treatments involved at Celebre Aesthetics, Surat in order to treat Vitiligo:
IPL or Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is useful for the treatment of vitiligo. Often also referred to as phototherapy, it makes use of UVB (Ultraviolet B rays) in order to treat the affected areas. Studies have shown that the use of UVB rays helps to either stop or slow down the spread of vitiligo.
In this treatment, consistency is the key. It is estimated that 2 treatments are required in a week and it might take up to 6 months for the result of the treatment to be visible
In the procedure of skin grafting, Dr Siddharth Sakhiya will transfer an upper thin layer of healthy pigmented skin in the problem areas. This process is highly beneficial for small patches of Vitiligo.
Skin grafting is done under general anaesthesia or local anesthesia for small areas so that the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.
Skin patches following trauma or burn or infection (external origin) almost always need surgical removal and suturing or skin grafting.
It is necessary to know that in the case of Vitiligo, every case is different. The course of treatment for every patient will thus differ according to their own personal needs and requirements. A ‘cookie-cutter’ approach does not work for Vitiligo. Dr Siddharth Sakhiya of Celebre Aesthetics, Surat understands this and draws up a unique treatment plan for every patient.
Non-Cultured Melanocyte Transfer
This procedure involves grafting of the skin from a smaller (1/3rd area of a regular skin-graft), healthily pigmented area. The melanocytes are then chemically separated from the skin graft. Then, the depigmented skin from the affected area is removed and the melanocytes are transplanted there.
This procedure is highly effective and delivers excellent results. However, the results take time to show and they are completely visible after 2-4 months.
How Is The Recovery After Vitiligo treatment?
The recovery highly depends upon the treatment performed.
- Recovery After Phototherapy
After phototherapy skin treatment, the patient might observe some redness and soreness on the treated site. Dr Sakhiya will ensure to prescribe some topical cream or medications to calm the site.
You will be given instructions on how to take care of the treated area and the overall skin during the on-going treatment sessions.
- Recovery After Skin Grafting
As skin grafting is a surgical procedure, the healing takes time. The patient is under observation for a few hours in order to keep an eye on the vitals and monitor whether the affected area is accepting the skin graft.
After the patient is discharged, they might be given medications in order to alleviate the pain which generally accompanies the surgery. Instructions on how to care for the surgical site might also be given. Extra care must be taken so as to not stretch the grafted sight as it may have a negative impact upon the treated site.
Following Dr Sakhiya’s instructions to the word is necessary to have a smooth and speedy recovery.
Recovery After Non-Cultured Melanocyte Transfer
After Non-Cultured Melanocyte Transfer, dressing is kept for a span of one week.
After the dressing is removed, phototherapy is started. Phototherapy needs to be continued for about 3 to 4 months. During these months, the depigmented skin slowly starts showing signs of repigmentation.
What Are The Risks Associated With Vitiligo Surgery?
Risks with Phototherapy skin Treatments:
These risks are generally temporary and slowly fade away a few hours after the surgery.
Risks with Skin Grafting and Non Cultured Melanocyte transplant:
There are chances that the donated skin graft might not be accepted in the recipient area. This may happen due to various reasons like the intake of tobacco before the surgery, movement of the graft on the area, poor blood flow to the grafted area, etc.
Necessary precautions are mandatorily taken at Celebre Aesthetics, Surat in order to avoid these risks from turning into a reality.
